Anambra Govt Seeks Cooperation Of Traders To Maintain Clean, Healthy Environment
27 APRIL 2018
As a follow up to the on-going desiltation exercise and eradication of street trading in Anambra state ,
the state Government has called on traders located at Onitsha main market to partner with her through total compliance and sustenance of policy.
Commissioner for Environment, Beautification and Ecology, Architect Michael Okonkwo, made the call to the market leaders during a monitoring and inspection tour of the market lines in order to determine their level of compliance to the exercise.
Architect Okonkwo who was represented by one of the Directors in the Ministry, Mrs Edith Ikeh, decried the indiscriminate display of wares on top of drainage channels, thereby obstructing the gutters from being opened and cleared as often as possible, stated that this has contributed immensely to environmental degradation , flooding and erosion menace presently ravaging the state.
The Commissioner further pointed out that the policy is a combined decision of both the Government and market executives , and is aimed at providing an enabling environment for people to go about their business in a conducive, clean and healthy environment as well as to ensure that the market environment is sustained for the sake of posterity.
While commending the markets leaders whose line have shown complicance by opening , cleaning and clearing their drainage channels, Architect Okonkwo urged them not to relent but ensure continuity.
In their separate responses the chairman of the lines , Mr Amaechi Okafor of Sokoto line , Mr Emmanuel Okafor of Johnson street , Mr. Paul Arror of Upper Pioneer among others, commended the Willie Obiano administration for it's doggedness in ensuring that the state is clean and healthy but appealed to the government to assist them by deploying some enforcement Marshals to the markets to enable them effectively enforce compliance on traders yet to comply .
They also advocated alternative shops for displaced traders.
