PETER CARDINAL OKPALEKE NEW COAT OF ARMS AND CHANGES IN VESTMENTS.

PETER CARDINAL OKPALEKE NEW COAT OF ARMS AND CHANGES IN VESTMENTS.

On Saturday, 27 August 2022, pope Francis will create new cardinals at a consistory in Rome. Among them is one of our own , Peter Eberechukwu Cardinal Okpaleke, the Bishop of Ekwuluobia Diocese. The appointment comes with changes.

1. COAT OF ARMS
The coat of arms of a cardinal (who is a bishop) is indicated by a red galero (wide-brimmed hat) with 15 tassels on each side (the motto and escutcheon are proper to the individual cardinal). The coat of arms of cardinal Okpaleke will change from Saturday 27th August 2022 after his elevation.

2. THE ZUCCHETTO
Cardinal Okpaleke's new skullcap, called a zucchetto, will be scarlet, as will many of his vestments. The color represents a cardinal's willingness to shed his own blood in the service of the Roman Catholic Church.

3 . CHANGE IN TITLE

Roman Catholic cardinals are often addressed as "Your Eminence," while bishops and archbishops are addressed as "Your Excellency or your Grace or Your Lordship.

4. THE BIRETTA

The most famous symbol of a cardinal is the "red hat," actually a scarlet biretta. The square design is thought to share its origin with the modern graduate cap.

5. A TITULAR PARISH

Each new cardinal is assigned a church in Rome, which he assists from afar and which bears his coat of arms.

6. THE CARDINAL'S RING

The gold ring symbolizes a cardinal's bond with the church and the papacy. Each pope chooses the design of the ring he gives to the cardinals whom he elevates.

Congratulations to our new cardinals.

PROUDLY A CATHOLIC
